A 44-year-old Pahoa man apparently drowned Sunday morning while diving in waters off lower Puna.
According to police, the man was diving from a boat when companions noticed him floating in the water. Fire Rescue was notified and five units, including a county helicopter, responded to the 10:09 a.m. alarm.
The chopper and a rescue unit recovered the man’s body from the boat, which was en route to Pohoiki Boat Ramp.
The victim was brought ashore at Kalapana Seaview Estates, where medics determined the man was already dead.
Police say foul play is not suspected. The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
